She wasn't here. Good. Her essence wasn't even close. He didn't need her interfering - he didn't know how close she had become to this man, or how long it would take to break him. He couldn't have become that close - Brandy only had been here two weeks, he had been with her for two years.
Derek had enough of a good look at the guy (even if it was mostly the guy's back side) that he was certain to spot him the first moment he emerged from that bar. He waited in the parking lot, his black jeans and red dress shirt hung loosely on his shoulders. Leaning against a lamp post his silhouette loomed eerily against the shadows that were painted on ground.
Derek lit a cigarette.
When Sam emerged, Derek had quirked an eyebrow curiously. What did Brandy see in this guy? Derek was much taller, he had a the body of a god and he was oozing with sophistication. This.. rough neck couldn't even charm his way out of a paper bag. This man was the direct opposite of Derek in almost every way. This was insane.
Oh wait. That's right. This was the f!cker that had his naked body all over his girl - inside of her. Anger was flaring inside of Derek again and he pushed himself away from the lamp post in annoyance.
With a flick of his wrist he sent the cigarette to the ground, stepping on it as he approached the man with a steady pace in his walk. This was the moment of truth, this was the moment that every hot-blooded man fighting for a woman had waited for.
The confrontation.
"Hey!"
His voice was sharp, it was more a demand laced in his tone that Sam did not go any further.
"You and I, are going to have a confrontation."

"Hey! You and I, are going to have a confrontation." a deep male voice came out of the darkness. Sam looked around, was he talking to him? Sam stopped in his tracks and tried to get a good look at the man behind the voice. A chill went down his spine as he realised this was no ordinary man, this was a Vampire.
He was tall and clad in the finest clothes. Who was he and why was he so interested in him? Sam swallowed down hard, he was starting to get a very bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. He was ready to shift at any moment.
"Confrontation?" Sam repeated carefully, "About what?"

"Confrontation? About what?"
About what? Derek scoffed at that. It occurred to Derek that Sam didn't know who he was. He probably didn't even know remotely what he looked like, why would Brandy even bother telling him? Stupid b!tch. It was no matter now.
"Not about what, it's about who. I'm sure you know who I am talking about now. The witch"
The last thing Derek had wanted was to scare the man away, but he wasn't about to invite the man into the bar for a beer either. Every time he looked into that man's blue eyes he kept seeing those eyes looking into Brandy's.
"I am sure she gave you some story how she ran away from me, because I was growing dark? How I am chasing her and how she is scared of me? The witch is very good at twisting the truth. And very good with her magic. You should know, you have seen them haven't you?"
His voice was unusually calm, rhythmic. Enticing. His words flowed without a second thought and he kept his face static. This wouldn't take long.

The Vampire scoffed at Sam and glared at him. "Not about what, it's about who. I'm sure you know who I am talking about now. The witch"
The Witch? Brandy?
Sam's heart sank, he slowly began realise exactly who this Vampire was. This was Brandy's ex-boyfriend, the one she was so terrified of. The one that made her run into his arms and ended up sharing a wonderful, passion filled night together. Derek
"I am sure she gave you some story how she ran away from me, because I was growing dark? How I am chasing her and how she is scared of me? The witch is very good at twisting the truth. And very good with her magic. You should know, you have seen them haven't you?"
As Derek spoke, he eyed Sam intensely. Sam just shook his head. "She left you and I'm guessing for good reason." BB was very adept at her witchcraft, as much as Sam could tell anyway. She wouldn't lie to him? Would she? Sam's blue eyes narrowed. "Look, I get your angry. I guess I'd be in the same position. But you and her..." Sam paused trying to keep his calm demeanour. "It's over."

"She left you and I'm guessing for good reason."
Hold. Your. Temper
"Look, I get your angry. I guess I'd be in the same position. But you and her...It's over."
Derek snickered. An actual snicker, a laugh almost. He shifted in his position, reaching into his pocket to pull out a cigarette. He knew it did nothing, but it was out of habit.
"And how long have you known her for? A week? And you have already shared her bed. Maybe even, grown intense feelings for her? In such a short time, for a woman? Come on, be realistic."
If Derek had a heart, it would be racing. He lit the smoke but it could only burn away - there was no capability for him to actually smoke the thing. It was sad really. Nonetheless, he brought the stick up to his lips and gave Sam one "look over".
"Geesh. Look at you. Your not homely, I will give you that. But look at me. Seriously. You know that I'm the type of guy women want. How many girls do you have crawling all over you? Throwing themselves at you? In such a short time do you really think someone like her would love someone like you? It's called magic, buddy, are you really that naive?"
Derek's eyes had lowered, was that almost a smirk on his lips? Oh, maybe. Derek was pleased with himself and how much he had this.. gift.. of words.
"Think about it. She was running from me. She wanted someone as quick as possible so that she could separate herself from me. But don't kid yourself, and certainly don't blame yourself. Matters of the heart and magic - well, they are a powerful thing aren't they?"
He smirked again, and had rose his head to look at Sam again before he flicked his cigarette away. It wasn't like he had to pay for them anymore anyway.
"Man to man. I feel for you. She is a beautiful woman. But she isn't meant for you, and it was a terrible thing she did. There are plenty of them out there after all"

Sam listened as Derek just talked at him. Over and over drilling it into him things Sam had just not thought about. How little he really did know Brandy and how quickly she singled him out. How much was that real? He tried to shake the doubts and succeeded for the most part. But this Vampire would not let up, smirking at him. Lording over him with his superiority in just about every way.
Was Brandy really capable of using her magick against him? Even if she did, how would he even know. He may be a Supernatural being, but it didn't give him any sort of immunity to powerful witchcraft. He paced a little, shaking his head. No, this was lies it had to be.
"Man to man. I feel for you. She is a beautiful woman. But she isn't meant for you, and it was a terrible thing she did. There are plenty of them out there after all"
Thoughts were still racing through Sam's mind. Derek had raised some valid points and emerged some doubts in his head. But he still couldn't quite believe him. He had to be twisting it some way surely. "Look." Sam said, trying to stay focussed and determined. "I dunno what sick game you think you're playing here. But it won't work on me." Sam turned to walk away but stopped and reached his head back to look at the Vampire. "I'm not buying your bullcrap."
Sam said the words, but his mind was beginning to churn into turmoil. Was Brandy really capable of the things Derek was suggesting.

"Look. I dunno what sick game you think you're playing here. But it won't work on me."
Hmm. Well, this was interesting. Not as easy as he thought it was going to be. This meant, surely, that this man did have some intense feelings already for Brandy. It was going to be harder to break him. But not impossible.
He was starting to crack already, Derek could feel it. Once the seed was planted, it would grow and fester on its own. Just needed a little more.. nurturing.
"I'm not buying your bullcrap."
"Bullcrap? Is that what you think this is all about? I feel sorry for you. She came right out and told you she was a witch didn't she? Opened your mind to it? Did she ask if you were single, could she tell how lonely you were?"
Derek couldn't be sure of the exact details, but he knew Brandy. He knew Brandy for three years, he had been with her for two. He knew how.. in tune she was with others. Still, for the life of him, he didn't know what she saw in this guy. Maybe in that, Derek was the naive one.
"You may think I'm sprouting bullcrap, you keep telling yourself that. You also keep telling yourself that those feelings you have, over such a short period of time, are real. You and I both know the world doesn't work that way."
There. He would end it there. Let him stew in what he said, let every little word stew. If he continued, he risked taking it too far - no, he had done just enough.
With that, Derek had walked away. A sick grin on his face as he did so. He would be running into Brandy again.
And he would do it right when the time was just right.

Well, that stung. The doubts all came rushing back, but Sam did his best to keep a straight face. How well that came across he didn't really care. He hated to admit it, but the Vampire was right. She was open and she did just seem to know how lonely Sam truly felt.
"You may think I'm sprouting bullcrap, you keep telling yourself that. You also keep telling yourself that those feelings you have, over such a short period of time, are real. You and I both know the world doesn't work that way
Ouch. There goes another snapback and another comment that hit home and gnawed away at him. Sam tried to convince himself as Derek walked away, that he was just trying to stir sh*t up. But he couldn't help but ask himself.
What if he's right?

Brandy had finally returned from her walk down Renard Parish Road, something she had decided to do on a whim. Things were going well, in fact almost perfect! She had a great guy, and even if Derek was still lurking around she couldn't even think about him. Being with Sam, it made all her fears just drift away - she had no doubt in her mind she could face Derek again with Sam by her side.
Brandy's mind drifted back to Thorn, the girl she meant on the side of the road. So Brandy wasn't the only one that like to wander around at night. She left Thorn to come back to Merlotte's, she couldn't keep pushing the feeling away that she should of been here.
When she arrived, she entered through the front. The other waitresses, who had known who she was by now and knew who she was there for - had told her that Sam had been out back for awhile now. Brandy offered her thanks and went toward the back screen door. Sure enough, there was Sam with his back to the building. This would be the perfect time to surprise him.
With a smile she came up behind him, wrapping her slender arms around him and standing on her tiptoes so she could rest her head on his shoulder.
"Hey there handsome, what you doing out here all by yourself?"
Brandy almost cooed, it felt so good to wrap her arms around him again. Even two hours away from him seemed like an eternity.

Sam couldn't face going back inside. His little face to face with Brandy's ex-boyfriend had left him in chaos. He didn't want to let his words get to him, but they made sense in a twisted sort of way. He hated this feeling. He was sure what Brandy felt was real, it sure felt real when she was in his arms.
Sam was so deep inside his own thoughts, that he didn't sense Brandy sneak up behind him and wrap her arms around him. "Hey there handsome, what you doing out here all by yourself?"
Sam moved his head slightly and reluctantly pulled away from her. "Hey Brandy." He couldn't mention Derek, it would only upset her or catch her out. Either way it hurt him to the core. "I was just out here thinkin' is all."

Something was wrong. There was no hello, there wasn't even a sense that he was glad to see her. As he pulled away from her.. wait.. he pulled away from her.
Something was really wrong.
"Hey Brandy."
Even the way he was saying her name was.. off. Her eyes were full with concern, his body language wasn't right at all.
"I was just out here thinkin' is all."
Thinking? His body was screaming at her, and she took a step back from him. Her heart was pounding, this wasn't right at all.
"I.. I don't understand. Sam, what's going on?"

"I.. I don't understand. Sam, what's going on?" her words made Sam's heart ache. He was so confused, so eaten up inside with guilt and doubt. He turned to look at her, it was the least he could do.
"I..." he paused trailing off, his head bowed for a moment before looking back up. "Things, there goin' so fast. I just need some breathing space to work my head out." he felt sick to even say it. But he had to be sure this was what he wanted. What she wanted.
"I'm sorry Brandy. I...just need some time." and at that moment his heart broke in two.

"I..."
Ba dum. Ba dum. Ba dum....
"Things, there goin' so fast. I just need some breathing space to work my head out."
No! No! No!! Why?? Brandy stood frozen. Her eyes welted up with tears almost immediately. She forced them to stay in her eyes. Her heart was in her throat and her slender arms dropped to her side. No, this couldn't - this couldn't of been happening!
"I'm sorry Brandy. I...just need some time."
"Time... you need... "
Her voice cracked, hadn't they.. hadn't she.. was she not..
Oh god. The tears were coming, and they would not stop.
"Sam.. am I.. was I.. was I not good enough? Am I really not.. I thought. I.. I just found you Sam..I can't.."
She just... She just couldn't stay there. She couldn't look at him. The emotions of grief and sadness, they were too much - she had just found him.. this wasn't fair at all.
She brought her hand up to her eyes, and she turned away. She couldn't force him to be with her. Her heart was broken, there was nothing left.
All she could do was run from him, god d@mmit - why couldn't the rain have come then? Why couldn't it of just come in droves as she disappeared down the road?
She wanted it to just wash her away.

Sam could barely look Brandy in the eyes, it hurt to see her in so much pain. What was he thinking letting this amazing woman slip through his fingers? It was too late now. The damage was done and now he had to live with it.
"Sam.. am I.. was I.. was I not good enough? Am I really not.. I thought. I.. I just found you Sam..I can't.."
Sam tried to find the words to say...say what? Sorry? She'd never accept sorry. He couldn't blame her. This was a mess, a huge giant Godzilla sized mess that he could see no way out of. He could only watch in hopelessness as Brandy ran off, tears rolling down her cheeks.
"F**k!!" he yelled out to no-one. He was beginning to regret listening to Derek already. What was wrong with him?
