Name: Kaelyn Halifax
Age: In human form she is 493 years old.
Member Group:(if you choose human, please say what kind of human...or a shifter, what kind of shifter, etc.) While her appearance is outwardly human, Kaelyn’s original form was that of a unicorn.
Character History: Once upon a time, there was a young man who went by the name of Thomas Hayman who was the unsatisfied son of a local linen merchant in the village of Brompton, England. To vent his youthful frustrations, the young man had taken up hunting in the local forests with any ounce of free time he could spare.
One evening as he was stalking a hare to fetch for supper, Thomas caught a glimpse of a unicorn grazing by a shallow pool. Mesmerized, the boy lost all interest in his previous game as thoughts of what it would mean if he dared to fell a unicorn on his own. Mustering up as much stealth as he believed possible, he crept nearer to the beast and just before he could attack the unicorn’s gaze fell upon him.
His weapon fell from his hand and Thomas fled the meadow, his heart beating madly in his chest as shame coursed through his veins. In those eyes he had seen each animal he had slaughtered in his search to stave off his own childish boredom. From that day on, Thomas returned to the pool where he had first seen the unicorn and would wait. Over the years the beast would return, allowing the man and his fascinations grow.
Not unlike the young Thomas’ interest in the unicorn, a young maiden had become infatuated with the ever elusive Mr. Hayman. When her advances were ignored she took up stalking the unsuspecting man. After following him to the edge of the forest for weeks, the girl finally snuck in behind him.
As he neared the clearing, jealously ran like wildfire through the girl as she watched a smile infused with love and adoration spread over his lips as the unicorn stepped into view.
“So this is where you always go,” she coolly announced as she crept out from behind the trunk of an old birch tree.
“Beverly! Why are you out here? Have you been following me?” Incredulation laced within his every word.
“Have you not noticed, Tom? I’ve only had eyes for you for as long as I can remember. Yet, here I find you…” Beverly said as she continued to march forward, nearer to the bewildered unicorn that seemed to be looking at Thomas for answers.
“I don’t understand…” Thomas mumbled numbly as he watched her, wide-eyed, approach with slow, precise movements.
“No, I suppose you wouldn’t,” she hissed below her breath as she reached behind her back to reveal a dagger that had been tucked away in her apron. “Not when you have something so beautiful to look at.”
Before either man or unicorn could react, Beverly slid the blade against her open palm to drag the bleeding appendage down the unicorn’s neck. The creature neighed in contempt and tried to pull away, but its movements became jerky and sluggish as it stumbled to the ground.
“What have you done to her?!” Thomas roared as he leapt forward to disarm the girl but before he could land a blow something wet splashed against his face and all his strength was sapped as he fell to the ground.
“Unicorns are weakened in the presence of blood,” Beverly stated in a monotone pitch, “I learned that from my grandmother. She is especially wise, for a witch, that is. She’s taught me so much over the years… I suppose I should put some of that knowledge to good use.”
Kneeling before the stunned creature, the witch wound her fingers through its mane and roughly jerked its head to the side. Dipping her fingers into her own blood, Beverly began to scrawl letters onto the unicorn’s fur.
“You have stolen the person I love from me. I’m going to hurt you for that trespass. You think you are above such a lowly creature like me, don’t you? I’m going to drag you down to my level.” As she painted on the last character she spit into the grass and stabbed the dagger deep into the earth.
“May you be bound, unicorn. Bound up within human flesh forever and knowing that you can never be with your own kind again. Separated from both worlds forever.” What once were low, pitiful whinnies were transformed into screams of agony. Where there was once a strong, magical creature there was now a sobbing, bewildered human female.
“Wh-What have you done…to me?!” The words slipped out from unused vocal chords as the newborn human struggled to pick herself up off of the ground.
“Only what you deserved,” Beverly spat out as she stood up to her full height to glare down at her victim. “Enjoy your loathsome eternity…” As she turned to walk away a sudden blunt force slammed against the side of her head. As her body fell there came another and another until there was almost nothing recognizable.
“You’ve ruined her!” Thomas shouted in rage as he continued to bash the rock into what was left of Beverly’s face.
“Thomas…” a quiet plea rose up from behind him, “Thomas, she’s dead. Please…”
Her words halted his actions and Thomas turned to face her, a haunted look imprinted upon his youthful features. “I’m so sorry. I should have been able to stop her.”
“I know,” she whispered accusingly, “but you can try and fix it. Please, Thomas, try and kill me. I cannot remain like this. Take her dagger and plunge it into my breast!”
“You know I cannot do that,” he replied softly, “I love you. I could not hurt you. Not now, not even after all of this.”
“But I do not love you. I will never love you. You should have known this when you first came into my meadow. Out of curiosity alone did I allow you to be near me…and look what it has cost me. Kill me, Thomas. It is the only way to make it right.”
Despite the pain he felt from her words, Thomas knew that she was right. With agonizing steps he placed himself before the one he loved and unsheathed the dagger from the cold earth. Thomas took one look into her sorrowful face, bit back the tears forming in his own eyes, and shoved the blade into the kneeling woman’s breast.
As her limp body crumpled to the ground he let out a wail of remorse and turned and fled. Just as before, he saw his sins within her eyes and it had been too much for his soul to bear.
Perhaps it was hours or mere minutes since his departure, but life began to stir once more in the pale body that rested upon the cool earth. Her awakening was punctuated with a wet, strangled cough and spasms shaking her entire body. With a shriek hands, wet with blood, found purchase on the dagger’s hilt that jutted out of her bare chest and yanked it from her body.
With the witch’s curse now proved true, sobs of anguish flooded over her and all the hopes she had held within her were snuffed out.
Personality: Kaelyn, over the years, has managed to make herself a rather complicated human. As when she was a unicorn, she cannot withstand to see or be near blood. On numerous occasions, when working in close proximity with humans, she has passed out from seeing the tiniest of paper cuts to full-blown nosebleeds.
She prefers solitude and has never allowed herself to become close to anyone she has ever met. Since she does not age, she has lived in a constant fear of being captured or worse by humans. In order to stave off this paranoia, Kaelyn has travelled the world and never remains in one area for too long.
She is a strict vegetarian. To consume anything flesh would sully her body and she tries to maintain the highest level of purity. Also, despite her age, she has remained a virgin. The mating habits of humans have always confused her and, from what she has researched, it seems to be an utterly violent process.
Kaelyn is a lonely individual. Knowing it to be impossible to ever be at peace, she is constantly aching for contact, but shuns it away out of fear. To accept humans would to accept her forced humanity and every fiber in her being protests the very notion.
Future Plans for your character Perhaps Kaelyn could finally find someone who could lift the curse and free her from her human body. If that is not possible, then maybe she can find solace within the town of Bon Temps and find some sort of peace.
Also, one aspect of her other nature that cannot be easily hidden is her shadow. If she remains still for more than a minute her shadow begins to shift and change into that of a unicorn. To avoid drawing attention to herself, Kaelyn avoids going out in the daylight unless it is necessary and generally sticks to having nighttime hours.
Have you read the books? Yes.
Sample RP Kaelyn was bone tired. She had pushed herself to make it out of Florida by nightfall and was now paying the price in weariness. She’d pulled up into one of the many rest stops that lined the highway and parked her Prius in between two large truck cabs.
As soon as she had the engine off she scrambled to get out of her seatbelt and out into the night air. Stretching her arms high above her head, Kaelyn breathed in deep only to find her lungs bombarded by the fumes of idling cars. Grimacing with annoyance, she locked up her car and marched further away from the rest area and over to a nearby field.
The moon was full and hung high in the air, its bright glow unfiltered by passing clouds and it bathed the earth below it in its soft light. She inhaled deeply, letting the cool, unpolluted air flow into her body with and released it with a content sigh. She hated that she had to rely on steel and rubber to get her to where she needed to be. Before her change she was as swift as the wind and could soar through the forests as quickly as the eagle could in his sky.
Before her thoughts could sour, the light snapping of a twig caught her attention. As she slowly turned towards the sound she noticed a slender form approaching out of the darkness from a small copse of trees. A young stag cautiously moved out into the open field and into the bright moonlight. It came to a stop ten feet away from her and bowed its head ever-so-slightly.
“Oh, you can see me can’t you, young one?” She whispered softly as she dared to take a step to close the gap between them. The stag gave a snort in response to her movement, but made no move to leave her presence. A watery smile made its way to her face as she allowed herself to draw close enough to touch the elegant animal. Just as Kaelyn raised her arm to rest her hand upon his lowered head a truck roared to life in the distance and the stag bolted away into the night.
Sorrow enveloped what spark of joy had flared up in that one, heart-wrenching moment. Drawing in a shaky breath and forcing back her tears, she turned away from the field and started back towards the rest area.
She had to keep moving.
